Name check · CRO register
Is your company name free?
Search the CRO register for your proposed name. We flag names that are taken, too close to an existing one, or use words that need consent.
How names are judged
The CRO refuses names that are identical or too similar to a registered name, that are offensive, or that suggest State sponsorship. Some words, such as “university”, “society” or “co-operative”, need consent from a named body first, and banking and insurance words need Central Bank approval.
FAQ
About the name check
Something else? Ask us directly.
Does a free result mean the name is reserved?
No. The check shows what is on the register right now. The name is only secured when the CRO registers your company, and a person here checks it again before we file.
Why was my name flagged as similar?
The CRO refuses names that are too like an existing one, for example the same words in a different order or with a different ending. If yours is close, you can still go ahead: we check it before filing and talk to you if it needs to change.
Can I use an Irish-language name or ending?
Yes. A private company limited by shares can end in “Teoranta” or “Teo.” instead of “Limited” or “Ltd”.
